Amazon Vine™ Review(What's this?)

I've been in the market for a wireless printer for a while, so I jumped on the chance to get one through the Amazon Vine program.SETUPThe Quick Guide is pretty easy to follow. One thing I did not expect is the need to remove (what seemed like) 8,382 pieces of blue tape from every single surface of the printer...inside the printer...there is blue tape everywhere. I don't know if Epson has stock in blue tape or what, but just removing all the blue tape took me several minutes. Installing the four ink cartridges was very easy - remove the yellow tape, click the cartridges in place, and then let the "priming" system run. That took about 5 minutes. The next step is to load the paper...and then we're off to install the software.SOFTWAREThe CD auto-runs (of course) and you can install the needed drivers/utilities as well as some other stuff I was not interested in. (An OCR program, etc). The main installation took about 5 minutes or so. Once the installation is done, it's time for the wireless setup.WIRELESS SETUPDoesn't get much easier than this. You can choose to connect a USB cable temporarily (just for setup purposes) but I elected the other option: connecting completely wirelessly. For this to work, you have to know the name of your network as well as the network password. (This info is probably on the back or side of your router, unless you've changed it manually). The printer will auto-detect your network - for me this took about 10 seconds. Then to enter the password, you use the number keys just like you're texting on an old cell phone. For "E" you have to hit the "4" key 7 times, etc. It's a little bit repetitive but it only took me a couple of minutes. Then the printer auto-connects to your network. At this point, you come back to the computer to verify the wireless connection and print a test page. Mine worked perfectly. The next option is to set up the fax, but I skipped that step. You can do that later by following the instructions in the manual.FIRMWARE UPDATEFor me, the next step was the installation program searching for, and then downloading, a firmware update. To install this update, you have to turn the printer off, then on again. The update took about 5 minutes, during which time the printer turned itself off and then on again.EPSON EMAIL PRINT / GOOGLE CLOUD PRINTThe next option is to choose whether you want to install and enable Epson Email Print and/or Google Cloud Print. To install Epson Email Print you have to create a new Epson account, which I didn't want to do, so I didn't complete that step. Google Cloud Print just requires - you may have guessed this already - a Google ID. I logged in and enabled this feature, and then did a test print of a photo from my external hard drive. The print job took about 30 seconds to start and it worked like a charm.PRINTINGI tried the basic settings and got a printed page in pretty much no time at all. A lot faster than my current printer (Canon Pixma). More detailed print jobs obviously take longer, but I was impressed with the speed and the clarity. I printed a photo of a museum placard on the lowest settings...and I can read all the words like I was in the museum. Pretty impressive.SCANNINGScanning works fine using the Epson Scan software. I was a little surprised to learn that if you just hit the "Scan" button on the printer, you you must use a USB cable. Wireless scanning is only supported using the Scan software.PRINTING FROM SMARTPHONEI downloaded an app called "CloudPrint" from the Android store (it's free). It lets you print from your smartphone to your printer, using the "share" or "send to" option. So if you have an app that you want to print from, just check to see if it has a "Share" or "Send to" option and if it does, you're in business. Not sure about the range...but in theory, if you leave your printer on while you're out, you can send print jobs to the printer and come home to a stack of printouts. Pretty cool.INKI've had Epson printers in the past that ate ink like it was going out of style. Obviously I haven't had this long enough to know how it handles ink, but I can tell you there are 4 cartridges (black, magenta, cyan, yellow) and they are fairly small so I would not be shocked to learn that they run out quickly. Right now, Amazon is offering a replacement multi pack for twenty five bucks, so that seems pretty reasonable.OVERALLIf you want to set up every single option it does take about 30-40 minutes, but it seems to me to be worth it. This is a great user friendly all-in-one machine. Highly recommended.
