We've been using this machine in our 5-6 person office for nearly 2 years, and I am very happy we chose to make the purchase. We have it setup as a network printer/scanner, and use it as our primary copier. There is another model that includes a fax feature, but we had a standalone fax machine previously.Printing and copying is fast. Some of us use the duplex function, but it takes more than twice as long to print on both sides than it does to print on a single side.We also use the scan-to-network function several times a day. When scanning using the automatic document feeder at a relatively low resolution I've noticed that the resulting image is often skewed. I'm assuming this is the result of the processor not keeping up with the feeder. When scanning at higher resolutions and/or using the flat bed the resulting images are very good quality. We rarely scan high resolution photographs, so I'm not able to comment on it's capacity for this type of scan, but when we have scanned photographs I haven't noticed any quality problems.Finally, the touch screen control panel is probably the best I've seen on a small office printer in this price range. The screen is quite large, and I've not experienced any problem naming scans, specifying the various settings, etc.As my five star rating suggests, I am very happy with this machine. In fact, while it would be overkill, I continuously consider buying another one for home because of it's reliability.

I bought the S405 through Amazon mostly on the basis of favorable reviews here and on other sites where electronic products are reviewed. Buying a printer that was efficient---meaning, didn't use much---on ink was highly important. In general, manufacturers price printers dirt cheap and then gouge you on replacement ink cartridges. All reviews rated the S405, and other Lexmark printers that use the 100 series cartridges, very highly in this regard. I went to a brick and mortar store and the sales people confirmed the Lexmark was very good in this regard. But, the particular S405 *I* received has been horrible. The cartridges packaged with it were toys---they ran out after just a few sheets of paper. I bought a full set (i.e., one black, 3 color) of cartridges at Office Depot, which set me back around $80, and installed them. These were the "XL" type---they cost more than the regular "L" cartridges but are supposed to be something like 3x more efficient for the difference in price. I expected a set like this to last something like 1/2 year at the rate we print---we use the Lexmark mostly for copying and color printing which we don't do much of, for regular black and white we use a different (laser) printer. It's been around one month and the black is nearly empty, all 3 color cartridges are only around 20-25% full, and we've only printed a little more than 100 sheets. At this rate, I will spend something like $700-$800 per year on ink, which is insane. I am in discussions with Lexmark technical support and most likely they will send a replacement printer, but first they want to ship me another cartridge and have me try again---as if it's at all likely that I bought 4 different malfunctioing cartridges at Office Depot! Anyways, the purpose of this review isn't to complain about Lexmark service, rather just to warn that so far I have no evidence this printer is at all efficient on ink, rather, just the opposite. A couple of other annoying things: when you install cartridges, they don't seat firmly. Actually, this might be related to my poor ink usage, perhaps this printer has some defect in the shape of the cartridge containers. Anyways, on every other printer I have ever used cartridges snap firmly into a compartment with some sort of spring-type grip and you can hear a distinct click, i.e., there can be no doubt whether a cartridge is seated properly. With this Lexmark you can never tell when a cartridge is properly seated, there is sometimes a click sometime not and it never feels firmly in place. Lastly, we have 5 computers in our house that need to reach the Lexmark wirelessly. So, I had to do 5 installations. Each installation was time consuming---this is *NOT* a printer where you can just "connect" and have the operating system automatically find drivers and set it up, it needs the Lexmark CD and a long procedure. On several of my home computers I had to repeat the procedure 2 to 3 times to get the installation to work. It is tricky, and will fail without obvious cause-and-effect reasons. The computers I installed on ran 3 different Windows systems, XP, Vista and 7, but the failures were spread around, they weren't all on one type. It simply appears to be hit or miss whether the install will work. By the way, I've got a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and 20 years experience in processor design, and so I know my way around these things, if I'm making errors then errors are too easy to make!

I just baught this all in one , because I needed to do some faxing, getting it out of the box and setting it up was simple, you just take it out of the box, and its ready to go. However the instructions on how to use it are in my opinion very limited,for example inputting your name or other information into it requires prior knowledge on how to do it, you must know about texting, since the instructions do not tell you you have to use the key pad like you would in texting. When you enter a fax number and you enter a wrong number it does not tell you you can back up and erase it by pushing the left side mark on the Ok ring. If you go to their website, it is not much better, Iam still fooling around with it getting to know everthing about how it works, so far it has been very simple. It works excellent, I have faxed a ton of papers, printed a whole bunch and copied a few, I have not used it for picture printing or copying yet but in printing the colors have all been very good so far, and it has worked flawlesly. It is kind of noisy but it is of no consequence to me. All in all Iam very satisfied with it. PS.. Iam 72 years old and not very computer literate!!!

After an absurd amount of research, this guy came up in the newspaper on special, I'd never heard of it because it was new, threw caution to the wind and bought it. And found this slightly too tall, a bit too plain whiter shade-o-beige bad boy to be just this side of perfect.Here's the problem: we all want an all-in-one that does the dishes, changes the baby and serves us martinis promptly at 7. And if you've got the space and the money, it's doable. But the lesson for the rest of us is to spread the love a little and let one machine do the color, keep the ancient fax for the increasingly rare times you use it and concentrate on finding one workhorse to do your printing, copying and scanning -- which is what yer mod-ren small business is all about.Those three jobs are handled with astonishing speed and grace on the D550. It sits on your desk, just a bit too high for my taste, causing you to either have to half stand up to view the 5-line control panel or, if you're a little crafty, position a business card-size pocket mirror on the ledge so you can see the printout without a stretch (yep, in reverse).To love: the beast goes from dead silent to first print in seven screamin' seconds. Really. So much fun you spend the first day or two just idly pressing print and counting mississippi's just to watch it again. Then one page per 2 secs without a shudder. Gorgeous.Scanner works from your computer software -- straight-forward, pdf to desktop, just what the client ordered, so you can then attach it to an email and forsake ye ole fax machine.Copier -- simple and flawless.Here's the other amazing fact: It likes manual feed. Show me another printer that can look you in the eye and say THAT. Copies are -- for the most part -- straight, error free, non-eaten, non-jiggered. There are real paper guides and you just push a sheet in and print.And the paper try holds -- gasp -- half a ream. AND doesn't have to be pulled out and opened up to restock. A devilishly simple clear plastic cover folds back and you plop the next inch of rag in. Takes 10 secs and nothing close by gets moved or falls to the floor.I expect this guy to last and continue to deliver (ya hear me boa?), as my other Canons have. So move over, Brotha, there's a new gun in tay-own...

Keeping it fed is the problem.If it starts to feel like an expensive drug habit, see "8 ways to lower your ink costs" below.Or consider the Brother MFCJ425W which cooperates with value-priced 3rd party inks. - - - Ink Cost: It Adds Up - - -This little $70 printer may cost you $1000+ over a 5 year period. With easy $45 installments, Canon hopes you won't do the supply-gouge math.To get the party started ASAP, Canon ships the printer with cartridges that are 30% and 45% full. (Or 70% and 55% empty if you prefer. See Note 1 for Canon ink details.)The ink refills (240 and 241 series) include a chip and the actual print heads. This discourages knock-offs. (It also means any print head problem is easily solved with a new cartridge.) After my HP laser printer died, our small office needed a laser combination printer-copier that was inexpensive to maintain and highly reliable. Totally unknown to me prior to study: AIO or MFC searches will frequently bring up only printer combos that include all 4 functions: print, copy, scan, and fax.After an extended search produced poor options, I discovered the DCP line which includes 3 of the 4 functions, dropping only the fax. This one difference from the MFC line meant far faster copy speeds, better quality printing and copying, and generally better quality all around on the 3 functions it performs.The DCP-8080DN can be connected to a computer by USB and other means; can be networked in a LAN; will copy as a stand-alone (using ADF or manual feed); comes with a full-sized toner cartridge (for est. 15,000 pages) rather than the skimpy initial toner with others. Toner is available in high-yield size that makes cost between 1-2 cents per page, so reasonable consumables. When added to initial purchase price of $330, the initial and long term costs are manageable.Yes, it is somewhat large but it's proving its value already. No more need for separate copier. It's completely silent when not in use and starts up pretty quickly. When printing, after warm up of maybe 12 seconds, pages pump out at the fastest rate I have ever seen for a small office laser printer. Seems the specs say 30 ppm, and it seems to be printing @ this rate. Copy speed is only slightly less fast. It will copy and print in duplex (2 sided) but speeds are considerably slower than printing/copying 2 separate pages.Scanning is excellent, with capacity to scan to email, and also includes an OCR software Presto Page Manager 7.18, which works well. We already have a Scansnap for scanning, so we won't use scanning often.Faxing is on the way out, with sheet feed scanning to pdf and emailing sufficing quite nicely.We paid $330 on Amazon, used Prime for free, fast shipping, and it was here in 2 days. Set-up was fast and easy. Its Quick Set-Up documentation could serve as a model for other companies. (What a relief, too!) Works great with both Apple-Mac and PCs.Brother should do a better job in distinguishing and marketing this DCP line. I only accidentally bumped into it, yet it offers several models for a range of prices. Finally, a multi-function printer that does not degrade printing because the unit adds copying and scanning.
