Don't bother using the disks that came with the printer. Better to go online at the hp site and download the driver software to this model.I went to the HP site (per one reviewer's suggestion) and installed the smallest "for IT professionals only" version (I'm still using XP OS) and found I could not use the scan function with that slimmed-down driver. As some users have noted, the scan function breaks - a bug in the software. (I discovered the web scan feature - just enter the printer's IP address into the browser url bar. Many thanks to the helpful customer who commented on my review.)Use the custom install option (uncheck the Photosmart, HP Purchasing junkware). To disable the incessant looping Update nag message popup after reboot, I deleted the HP Update application (via Add/Remove utility) after installing the driver. I agree HP software is rather crappy and bloated but the HP printers have been more reliable than other brands I've used. I bought the 6500 to replace my 6 year old HP PSC 1210 that died after years of heavy use. Before that, I bought the HP Deskjet 500 that still works after 20 years. I hope this machine lasts awhile, as well.I'm surprised this newer-model printer isn't faster than my old printer (equally noisy to my 1210) but the scanner is improved - more adjustment options, decent resolution. I wanted the flatbed copying and sheet feeder capabilities for my next multi-function machine and this one does the job adequately.Had a power outage recently and was concerned that since I didn't power off via the button on the printer, it might screw up the settings.. but there was no issue. It worked fine after power was restored, without me having to make any adjustments. Also, if you don't want to wait for the printer to warm up and print heads cleaned every time at startup, just leave the machine on all the time.To have the ink cartridges last longer, I set the print resolution to "Fast Draft" for most of my projects.Addendum (5/16/10): Ignore the "empty cartridge" alert on the machine. The final warning will stop the print jobs from proceeding. Just take that ink cartridge out and re-install it back into the machine. This will override the "out of ink" status. You'll get at least another 20 pages before the ink cartridge is actually empty.Update (7/16/11): I still have this HP All-in-One and found several refill kit vendors to replace the ink for both the slim and XL sized cartridges.The kits are sold on Amazon - Inktec - color set or black refill sold separately. Also, there's the good-valued 600ml color & black combo ink refill kit. Links on reviews get blocked so do a search on Amazon for "Inktec refill HP 920XL" and "600 ml refill hp 920 XL" to find those items.

This printer is much more than I expected. The network operation (wifi or ethernet) makes it very nice. You can also connect to it directly with USB, but I haven't bothered with or tried that.First, the caveats. There are specific drivers for printing on Windows and Mac OS X. Scanning software is provided for Windows only. Linux (at the point of this writing, at least) can neither print to nor scan from this all-in-one directly. I use all three operating systems within my home. Here's how I have it working from each OS.For printing:Windows uses the drivers provided. They work fine.OS X uses the drivers provided. They also work fine.As for Linux, I've been unable to find any CUPS drivers that work. I found a post that mentioned it uses the same drivers as the Xerox Phaser 600B, but I couldn't get those to work. Thus, my Linux machines use the printer via OS X. On the Mac, I've shared the printer with the network. Linux CUPS can communicate directly to this Postscript virtual printer and print. (Note that this sort of setup does not work as easily with Windows sharing the printer).For scanning:While there is software included for scanning on Windows, I don't even bother with it. This printer supports scanning directly to an SMB share or to an FTP server. That means I can create an SMB share on Windows, OS X, and Linux, On the scanner, I can manually select the scan quality and which computer should receive the scan. The scanner will scan to a PDF file (or TIFF or JPEG) and deposit in the SMB share I selected. It's great. It's easy. And it requires nothing proprietary anywhere. The tricky part is setting this up. You do it by adding entries to the Address Book via the printer's web interface which is easily accessible by pointing your browser to your printer's IP address. The web interface actually lets you change a lot of settings. There is a lot of power in there and it's an unexpectedly nice surprise. You don't need any of the software they include. You can do everything and more from this web interface.You can also have the printer email your scans to addresses you set up in the Address Book.Faxing:I haven't tried faxing anything yet, but it seems like a fairly normal fax machine. Dial the number, scan and go.And then the quality -- it's impressive. I read a lot of reviews for color lasers as I was looking to buy one and a common complaint among the cheaper ones seemed to be issues with page curl, banding, and grain. I have not seen any of these issues with this printer. Even a photo that I printed on plain paper, which I expected to look somewhat newspaper-like in quality, looked pretty good. Based on that, I'm fairly confident that if I had used glossy paper, I wouldn't really be able to easily distinguish it from my old inkjet (but I have not tested this -- no laser-safe glossy paper on hand -- so don't take that as fact). However, unlike an inkjet, a laser printer generally cannot do borderless prints. This printer definitely has hard borders at the 8.5"x11" edges, so if you do print a lot of photos, you may still want to stick to an inkjet. Personally, if I need to print photos, I just use a drugstore or discount store now.Speaking of inkjets... I've owned at least 5 different inkjets in the past decade or so, all by different manufacturers. Like an idiot, I kept buying from different companies hoping that THIS TIME I'd get an inkjet where the ink didn't evaporate, or didn't need to clean the heads when I wanted to print, only to use up all the remaining ink during the 10+ minute cleaning cycle. Invariable, by the time it was finally ready to print, I had to replace an ink cartridge. It was maddening and I was spending so much money on ink. I don't print every day, and I hated that EVERY TIME I wanted to print, I had to go through the cleaning process and replace at least one (but usually 3) color.Now, I don't worry about that anymore. This thing, like all lasers, uses toner. Toner doesn't evaporate. It doesn't have some unbelievably long cleaning cycle. It does take about 30 seconds to power up from deep sleep, but that's lightyears ahead of my inkjet experience and far, far less frustrating. And this is the case whether it's been 1 day or 1 month since the last print.So overall, the only thing that disappoints me about this printer is its lack of Linux printing support. But I knew that when I bought it, and at least, as long as I own a Mac, printing from Linux is possible.

I admired the design of the original Envy 100 but held off on buying one. I just went ahead with the updated 110 model this past weekend.The printer was a breeze to set up. My PC established an ad hoc wi-fi network with it and securely transmitted at my primary home network's info securely to the printer itself and then switched both back to my regular wi-fi network (802.11g with WPA2). After that completed, the printer "just worked" without requiring any configuration on the printer itself.Printing from my laptop or from my iPhone works perfectly. Earlier reviews had talked about the tray and panel not closing properly - that all seems to be working fine for me. The printer is almost silent in its operation. It's so sleek and stylish that it looks perfectly in place sitting on an side table in my living room.I haven't used the e-fax feature yet but am glad to have it. For the occasional sending or receiving of faxes, being able to do so without a land line is a welcome feature.It costs a bit more but the design and operation are superior to the inexpensive options, in my opinion.

The Cannon MP620 all in one is a great product. It was easy to set up. It has wireless capabilities, but you will need other equipement to do so depending on your home system. ie. blue tooth or router etc. It prints quietly and the quality of print is great. It does print slower than other printers, but that isn't a concern for my needs. I love the on board screen that you can easily navigate to print, fax, copy, scan, send to documents etc. It looks good especially for a home office. The paper is loaded in the bottom tray, so it isn't exposed giving in a clean-lines appearance. It also has a small footprint which is amazing thinking of all it does. You can close the output tray when not in use. If you forget to open it for printing, it opens itself. It has 5 inkwells, so the ink is more cost effective. I will say since it is a newer product, so you may not find the ink just anywhere yet. It is also confusing which ink goes with it. It takes Cannon CLI 221 magenta, black, yellow, cyan and a larger PGI 220 black ink cartriges. The 221 are about $12 each and the 220 is about $15. You can get multi packs to save some too. All in all I am very happy with the product.

I did a lot of research online and quickly got very caught up with all of these massive all-in-one devices that had way more functionality than I would ever need. If you are like me and just need a home printer to print the occasional directions/maps, recipes, coupons, bills, etc., then this is definitely the printer for you.Before you buy a printer online you need to go to a store and see just how large these all-in-one devices actually are. My wife took one look at them and told me there is no way that is going in our home office even if it also served as a micro fridge and coffee maker. The great thing about this HP 3050 is that it has a much smaller footprint than most all-in-one printers. It has print, copy, and scan functionality, but no fax. Who needs a fax these days anyways when you can just scan a file and then email the scanned document. Most devices don't have a fax out capability anyways so unless you are operating a business out of your house and you receive a lot of faxes the lack of fax on this model should not be a problem.The printer is not too heavy and it's packaged really well in the box. Instead of being wrapped in styrofoam it is secured with recycled cardboard and wrapped in a reusable canvas bag that you can use for your groceries. It comes with a quick installation guide, as most HP printers do, and the set up went very smoothly with no problems. There is one piece of cardboard wedged inside near the ink cartridges that I missed, but the printer told me of my error and it was easy enough to remove.Setting up wireless was also not a problem, but you will need to be familiar with your wireless network security settings in order to get the printer connected. An alternative is just using the USB cable, which is nicely included in the box. I haven't played around with web printing yet, but it's not hard to just plug the USB cable into my desktop or laptop and print what I need.The only negative I can think of is that the printing is a bit loud, but unless you're keeping the printer in the room with the baby crib the noise isn't THAT loud that it would be a dealbreaker. Ink consumption so far is not noticeably different than my prior HP, but I don't print all that much all that often so this is tough to measure for me.Overall a high quality printer with all the functionality non business users would need with a smaller footprint and lower price tag than most other all-in-one printers.
